Everything You Get from A Journey Transforms You
Settling into a new apartment, Substack love, and music getting me through it
The process of moving is usually a painful affair.
My body is still ache-y after a week long rampage of packing, organizing, coordinating, hanging, reorganizing, unpacking, and settling belongings in the new home. As of Sunday, we’ve unpacked about 96% of everything we brought in, an ungodly effort, and if you saw our new apartment in person, you wouldn’t believe the space sat empty the Tuesday morning before. My partner Kyle and I aren’t good with living out of boxes. And so, we go through the very painful tag-team effort of Tetris-ing our life back together again, taking all the odd pieces and parts and fitting them just so into this new space. Part of our success is in the pre-planning, taking diligent measurements, creating mockups in Photoshop of what goes where. I’m quite proud of how it’s all come together, everything in it’s right place.
Sadly, due to all the real life goings-on there wasn’t a lot of writing on the site last week, which I aim to change this week. There was a bit of great news though as Substack chose to highlight both this very newsletter, as well as Kyle’s The Trend Report, in their On Substack newsletter. A very warm welcome to all the new readers joining us. Please say hi in the comments if you’re new, and while you’re at it, bookmark my website The Fox Is Black for creative inspiration.
So what got me through this week? Hamburgers, cava and a much needed mani pedi, to be honest. But also, some beautiful fashion runways, great music, and a lot of TikTok scrolling between unpacking boxes.
Let’s start with the music that soundtracked my moving experience, a mixed bag of records from across the spectrum. For the morning time, and to stay focused on the tasks at hand, I listened to a lot of Signs by Purelink. Once I was in the groove and really feeling it, Volcano by Jungle, which is such a fun record. Masahiro Takahashi’s Humid Sun is one of the best of the year so far, it got a lot of plays. Playing Robots into Heaven by James Blake is astounding, honestly one of his best records, I can’t humming it to myself. And finally, I was playing back SASAMI’s self-titled record a lot.
Last week was Milan Fashion Week Spring 2024, and from what I’ve seen, there are two clear standouts, which I intend to write about this week. The first was Ferragamo, which in the care of Maximilian Davis, is now one of the hottest houses in fashion. The silhouettes were refined while still inventive, his precise usage of color was astounding, and everything felt fresh. The other big standout was Bottega Veneta, where Matthieu Blazy is yet again shaking things up. If you’re creative in any way, or perhaps love fashion, you have to see this show. The colors, the patterns, the textures, it’s all so inpiring. The man is unstoppable right now.
