I’ve been in an introspective this past month. Partially this is me evaluating what I want to focus on in my life, which is in part due to the fact that I’ve been quite busy with a new job and some fun side projects. I haven’t sent an email in a while because I keep feeling like I don’t have anything important to say, or that there’s enough people out there sharing things at this point. Am I really making anything interesting here? That all said, I still love making these mixtapes, and they do feel like something special, like a little piece of art you can listen to each month.
This month I set out to create a mix that was rather calm and tranquil, as it had been raining nonstop and it felt fitting. The beginning starts out with a clip from my favorite movie, Lost In Translation, a scene where Charlotte and Bob are laying in bed, and sharing their thoughts on life. This popped into my head and it felt right, both with the tone of the mix, and also where my head was at. There’s a line from the film Orlando, an old version of Nico singing live, old faves of mine like Devendra, as well as a bunch of new tracks I discovered and that have come out recently.
Ultimately this ended up feeling like a soundtrack to a movie that hasn’t been made yet. It meanders and flows between styles and genres, it feels joyful and somber, and is ever surprising. I feel like I say this eery month but it’s really one of my favorite mixes that I’ve made. I’ve been listening to it as I go on long walks around Barcelona, which has only been recently happening now that the weather has become so beautiful.
