“The best laid plans of mice and men often go awry.” That’s exactly what happened with this month’s OÍR mixtape. My intention was to make a 90’s R&B mixtape, which I did, though after listening to it a few times… it wasn’t clicking as I hoped it would. Did I feel nostalgic? Yes. Did it take me back to my childhood? Yes. But it didn’t give me that excitement of hearing something new and interesting. Of something different that no one has done before.
I decided to make a new mixtape in basically a week. I dug deep into Soundcloud, into albums I’ve recently been listening to, and formed something… unique. Challenging might even be a good word for it. There are parts that are hispanic/latino electronic, some parts are acoustic guitar, some are straightforward ambient. The cover photo is something I saw on a hike the day after X-Mas which like it fit perfectly for this mix. Rough and energetic, a little chaotic, with lots of nuance and depth. I had two little epiphanies, I suppose I would call them, about the things I share, and what I’m focusing my energy on, something I’ll be writing about soon. When it comes to music, I want to push my comfort levels, and yours as well, to hear things unlike you’ve heard before, things you won’t get pushed by an algorithm.
As for the 90’s R&B mixtape? I’ll send that out with the newsletter that’s coming out on the 10th, as a very special, very horny, Valentine’s Day mix you can throw on. As for this mix, I would love to know your thoughts whatever they may be!
