The holidays are in full swing over here with lights and garland strung up across the city and my oven cranking out pies and cookies galore. And while part of me misses the warm winter weather of Los Angeles another part of me is excited to bundle up ins sweaters and heavy overcoats to brave the rains and winds of winter. To further set the holiday mood this month’s mixtape is a collection of my favorite X-Mas songs, an eclectic mix of the new and old, with some funs surprises and alternative versions that you may not have heard before.
The mix begins with The Waitresses classic “Christmas Wrapping” which may very well be the most fun Christmas songs ever, not to mention that it’s also one of the most romantic and hopeful. From there we go into an epic bit of disco which then leads us to Wham! followed by one of my favorite remixes ever by Shakarchi & Stranéus. Then it’s back to some classics, The Jackson 5 and The Ronettes, get a little weird with Paul and Eurythmics, and then swerving into Sally Shapiro’s cover of Madonna’s classic “Holiday.” We head into some rock & roll with Sufjan, John and Yoko, and a new find for me from Chuck Berry. Finally, we finish up on the softer side with Bright Eyes, and of course, Jeff and Joni. I wanted to distill all my favorites tracks, which was challenging, as I feel like I left out some all time classics in the process.
What are some of your favorite holiday songs? Anything out of the box that I should know about, or a hit that you think is under the radar? Let me know in the comments.
Track 2, Disco Christmas, is a new and now instant household holiday favorite. Thx for the grooves.
