We’re smack in the middle of a country renaissance (even though we know it’s a BRAT summer) and attention to the genre has never been more hyped. This is mostly due to capitalism (wheeeee) though country, and it’s predecessor folk music, has always been an important of American culture. I wanted to create a mix that captured that powerful feeling of an artist with their guitar, encapsulating a deep and thoughtful expression for these early summer days.
This compilation spans over 60 years with the oldest song being Anita Carter’s haunting and gorgeous “As the Sparrow Goes” while the newest being Cindy Lee’s “Dallas”. There are some fun covers (Yo La Tengo’s version of The Kinks “Oklahoma, U.S.A. and Jim James take on George Harrison’s “All Things Must Pass”), some live versions of timeless classics (both Neil Young and Willie Nelson) and some deep cuts from the likes of Jenny Lewis and Devendra Banhart. And don’t forget, you can download the rest of the monthly mixtapes here.
It’s currently raining here in Barcelona, and it seems like it’s going to be raining for the next week, so sadly it’s not so summery here, haha… hopefully your week is a bit sunnier than mine 💛
Sensational picks!
