We Are the Music Makers and We Are the Dreamers of Dreams

Last Sunday, I spent a good portion of my day tidying and beautifying narrow terrace that sits outside my apartment. It’s a terrace that’s stereotypical of Barcelona, of Europe broadly, fitted with ornate iron banisters and rails, relics of a more beautiful time. Since moving into this apartment the terrace has mostly been a home for an eclectic collection of plants which brings a life and vitality to the building-lined view. We had friends over to our apartment not too long ago and one of them stepped outside to smoke on the terrace and I realized that it hadn’t really been used to it’s full potential. As a place of refuge, a place to unwind, or at the very least, a place to sip my coffee in the morning sun while I can.
With the season’s change in full swing it felt fitting to compile a mix of songs for October’s edition of OÍR that embodied that feeling of change. A bit melancholy, like feeling the last warm rays of a setting sun. What really inspired this mix was thinking of Broadcast as their albums always remind me of the fall, and I’ve really been enjoying Clairo’s new record (more on that below) and she has a track, that to me, sounds incredibly inspired by the music of Broadcast. So I built off of those tracks, of course adding in a classic from Stereolab and a favorite Kings of Convenience remix from Ladytron. The mixtape ended up flowing from lo-fi rock to experimental rock with a tinge of electronic weirdness and ending with a flow of ambitious and ambient tracks that end exactly like a sun setting.
Nala Sinephro / Endlessness →
I first heard Nala Sinephro on her debut album Space 1.8 and now her second release, Endlessness, continues her exploration of jazz and ambient music, creating a record that defies any sort of typical classifications. Meandering and wandering, this is one of my favorite albums of the year, hands down.
DJ Nobu Rainbow Disco Club Mix →
One of the best out there, Japanese DJ and producer DJ Nobu is always a good time, and this recording of his set at Rainbow Disco Club is a house and disco journey. It’s a two hour set full of great energy and deep cuts, highly recommend when you need to clean your house.
Jamie xx / In Waves →
After nearly 10 years Jamie xx finally released a new record titled In Waves, bringing back much of the energy and excitement from his previous release, In Colour. It’s a solid record with lots of danceable hits, lots of special guests showing up, which makes for a fun record to throw on during a late Saturday night.
Clairo / Charm →
I was surprised that I ended up loving Clairo’s third album, Charm, so much, because I kept hearing her on TikTok and thought it wouldn’t be for me. I decided to give it a try, and honestly, it’s one of the most beautiful albums I’ve heard in a while. The songs on Charm have a wide range of styles, a broad range of moods, and I feel like she’s truly made a timeless album.
Anthony Naples at Floresta →
Recorded last year at Floresta, this 3 hour set from Anthony Naples is an energetic electronic set that spans house and techno and everything in-between. This is one of those mixes I put on when I have a design project and I really need to focus. If you enjoy this you should try his last album Orbs, which is a great record.
Elijah Fox / Hydra (Piano Works) →
Funny enough, another artist I discovered through TikTok, Elijah Fox is a pianist and composer who earlier this year released Hydra, which was recorded on the Greek island of Hydra. The majority of the songs are improvisations inspired by the island and the studio, which is in a renovated 18th century carpet factory overlooking the islands and Aegean Sea. Beautiful piano works, I highly recommend listening to “Perseus,” one of my personal favorites.
I bought an iPod dock with speaker for a few bucks at a thrift store a couple of years ago. My iPod classic still works but the aux is busted, so this was the best way to listen to its contents. A time machine, the soundtrack to my life in the years between 2007 and 2012, when I was in college and starting my career and spending many hours on trains.
The Kitsune Noir ‘Sunshine Sometime’ mix has been my favourite to start the day with. My kitties even respond to it, knowing it means breakfast time!
Its so magical to only be able to listen to it in my kitchen, as my iPod is no longer portable and I don’t have a copy of its contents anywhere else, and your mix is obviously not something I can look up on Spotify.
As an elder millennial I appreciate things that are enjoyable in specific locations or situations, and am nostalgic for the days you knew exactly where the person you were IM-ing with was sitting. Like my version of the hallway family phone or listening to vinyl records. So that iPod and your mix really scratch that itch for me. And it is so beautiful.
Only recently I figured I would google Kitsune Noir to see if you are still out there, making mixes. And here you are. Thank you for making it then and for still making things. You are a true artist to me ❤️
